Asian American Federation Celebrates New York City’s First Lunar New Year Holiday in School History

New York City:  Today, the Asian American Federation proudly joins Mayor de Blasio, Chancellor Carmen Fariña, and all of New York City’s leaders in celebrating the first Lunar New Year holiday in New York City’s public schools.  For the first time in history, the City’s nearly 165,000 Asian students are able to officially celebrate the Asian community’s most widely observed cultural holiday without having to miss school.

The City’s induction of the Lunar New Year holiday into the school calendar finally reflects the explosive growth of the Asian population in New York City, which has grown 33% in the past 13 years and now comprises 15% of the overall population.  Today, children of Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, and many other heritages will be included in the education system.

We applaud our City’s leadership in recognizing the importance of the Asian community’s heritages and look forward to the inclusion of a Lunar New Year curriculum in all schools in the years to come.

Happy Year of the Monkey!
