January is the ideal time for community groups to start preparations for the upcoming City Council Discretionary requests due in Spring. Listed below are 2 workshop opportunities for community groups to hear with experts on how the funding request process works and what groups should be doing now in preparation.

The Asian American Federation invites you to a workshop on:

Preparing for the FY 2013 City Council Discretionary Requests

When: Friday, January 20, 2012, from 9:30-11:30 am

Where: Our new office, 120 Wall Street, 9th Floor

Why: Annually, each City Councilmember allocates discretionary funds to community groups to support social services, youth and senior programs, and other initiatives as prioritized by the Councilmember. Discretionary funding requests are not overly complicated, and is a great way to receive much needed support during these financially tough times. This workshop will offer tips on when and how to prepare your organization’s request, how to introduce your organization to city leaders, how to craft a compelling request, and much more. Continental breakfast will be provided.

Asian led organizations received a 27% increase in City Council discretionary funding last year, and a 35% increase in City Council Initiative funding. Despite the gains, Asian led community-based organizations are only receiving a small part of the pie: about 2% of all discretionary funding, and 0.28% of all initiative funding.

As the City Council discretionary process will begin in February 2012 and as we continue to face State and City budget cuts during these tough economic times, CACF is hosting this vital workshop to help our member and partner agencies become better informed on how to access discretionary dollars. By enhancing the advocacy skills of Asian led and serving organizations, we ensure that the needs of the Asian Pacific American community continue to be addressed.
