Commissioner Gladys CarriĆ³n Meets with the Asian American Community

Held on August 3rd at Visiting Nurse Service’s office on Broadway, the Federation organized forum with Commissioner Gladys Carrión of the NYS Office for Children and Family Services on 2007.   The Commissioner met with over 35 individuals, more than half of whom are from Asian American community-based organizations.  After Governor Eliot Spitzer nominated Commissioner Carrion, she was confirmed by the senate on March 12, 2007.  Commissioner Carrión has numerous responsibilities at her new post, including overseeing child care services, directing juvenile delinquent programs, and functions performed by the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.

This was the 3rd forum the Federation organized this summer and the goal was to give agencies a chance to meet with new State appointees to vocalize the difficulties they have in providing services to the Asian American community.  Some issues discussed were: language access, child care services, youth development services, holistic service approach and funding difficulties that small community-based organizations face.
